PrestaShop 9: What’s New and When to Update Your Store

· Krzysztof Balicki

A modern open-plan office with computer workstations

PrestaShop 9 is a major release built on a new technical foundation. It runs on Symfony 6.4, supports PHP up to 8.4 and has a refreshed admin panel. Does that mean you should hit „update” right away? No. Move your store only after your modules and theme pass a compatibility test on a staging copy. Below you’ll find an overview of the changes, how they affect extensions, the server requirements and my advice on when and how to migrate.

What’s new in PrestaShop 9?

In short: Symfony 6.4 LTS, PHP 8.1 to 8.4, a new look for the admin panel and stricter security settings during installation. The full list is in the official PrestaShop 9 release announcement. In practice, a store owner will mostly notice the following:

  • Symfony 6.4 instead of version 4.4 as the base of the whole application,
  • a back office rendered entirely by Symfony and Twig, another step in moving the platform to this framework,
  • a new admin panel with a more modern look that matches the current brand identity,
  • a random database table prefix, assigned by default during installation.

What about Hummingbird? It isn’t the default theme, but it shows where future themes are heading. It clearly separates Bootstrap styles from PrestaShop styles, so your own overrides are much easier to write (anyone who has fought the CSS cascade in the old Classic theme knows what I mean). The Classic edition downloaded from the official website includes PrestaShop SA modules.

Symfony 6.4 and PHP 8.4: what it means for store owners

Two things. Longer security support for the framework and the option to run your store on a newer PHP version. Symfony 6.4 is an LTS release, meaning it has a long support period, and according to the platform’s developers it gets security fixes until November 2027.

As for PHP, PrestaShop 9 supports versions 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 and 8.4. Before you plan anything, contact your hosting provider. Which version runs on the server? Can it be changed? Without that answer, the rest of the plan has nothing to stand on. A store on Symfony 4.4 and older PHP is a good reason to plan a PrestaShop store migration. But not a reason to rush it.

PrestaShop 9 and your modules and themes: where the risk is

This is where it gets tricky. It’s a major version, so some modules and themes will need updates before they work properly. The vendor itself explicitly recommends thorough testing before you move your store. Custom modifications and template overrides that a developer once added outside the standard take the biggest hit, because that’s where the architecture changes and deprecated components land.

Before migrating, review:

  • the list of installed modules and their current versions,
  • your theme, especially if it has been customised,
  • your own code fixes and overrides,
  • payment, shipping and third-party system integrations.

What if an old module has no version compatible with the new platform? You can turn to PrestaShop modules from K4.pl, sold with a licence that covers updates and support, or order a module built for your store’s specific needs.

When should you update your store to PrestaShop 9?

When your key modules and theme have compatible versions and the test on a copy passed without errors. That’s it. I would hold off if a critical module doesn’t have a compatible version yet, if your theme was heavily customised or if peak sales season is coming (updating a week before Black Friday is asking for trouble). You can move earlier with a new store, a simple set of extensions or when your hosting is forcing a switch to newer PHP anyway.

How to prepare the PrestaShop 9 update step by step

Backup first, then a staging store, a compatibility review, and the production migration only at the very end. The order:

  1. Make a full backup of your files and database.
  2. Set up a copy of the store in a staging environment.
  3. Check the PHP version on the target server.
  4. List your modules and theme, and ask the vendors about compatibility with the new version.
  5. Update the copy and test an order, a payment and work in the admin panel.
  6. Move the changes to production during a low-traffic period.

For developers and integrators, the platform’s creators have documented the most important changes and the components being deprecated. There is also a series of technical articles tagged PrestaShop 9, including migration guides. Your developer should read them before the first commit, not after.

Overall, PrestaShop 9 is an investment in security and newer PHP, not a race against the release date. The timing of your move depends on module and theme compatibility confirmed on a staging copy. Not on the calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Which PHP versions does PrestaShop 9 support?

According to the release announcement, the platform runs on PHP 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 and 8.4. Before migrating, check with your hosting provider which version is available on the server. Running older PHP? Then plan the PHP upgrade together with the store update.

Will my modules work in PrestaShop 9?

Not all of them. It’s a major version, so some extensions need updates. Ask each vendor for a version compatible with the new platform. Even then, only a test on a copy of your store gives you certainty.

Is Hummingbird the default theme in PrestaShop 9?

No, Hummingbird is not the default theme. It shows the direction of theme development, and the creators encourage developers to test it and send feedback.
