Country and Language Selection on a WordPress Site: How to Send Visitors to the Right Version

The best approach is to detect the visitor’s country, suggest the matching version of the site and let them have the final say. No forced redirects. Country selection on a WordPress site matters for stores and company websites that serve several markets, because it decides whether customers see the right offer, currency and delivery terms. Below I explain how a multilingual site differs from a multi-regional one, how geolocation works and what to avoid so you do not shoot yourself in the foot with Google.
Table of Contents
Language version or country version: what do you actually need?
A multilingual site offers the same content in several languages. A multi-regional site targets specific countries, often with a different offer, prices and delivery. In Google’s guidelines for multi-regional sites, the example of the first is a Canadian company with English and French versions, and of the second a manufacturer shipping goods to Canada and the US. You can also combine both models (and in practice many companies end up doing so), for example separate versions for two countries and two languages in one of them. Everything else depends on this decision. Are you directing visitors to a language, a country, or both at once?
How does WordPress geolocation by IP address work?
The plugin matches the visitor’s IP address against a location database and uses it to work out which country they are connecting from. What happens with that information next? You can show a message, swap part of the content or suggest a different domain or subpage. But there are limits. VPNs, travelling customers and corporate networks can point to a completely different location, so I treat the result as a hint, not a certainty.
Also, the country from the IP is not the same as the browser language. A Pole living in Germany connects from a German address, yet may still prefer the Polish version of the site and Polish customer service. Simple? On paper, yes.
Redirecting by country and SEO: why you should not force a version change
Google advises against automatic redirects between language versions, because they can cut users and crawlers off from the other variants of the site. Googlebot usually connects from the US. It also does not send the Accept-Language header, which tells the server the preferred language. The result of a forced redirect? The crawler may never see some versions at all, and they will not make it into search results.
A banner or pop-up with a suggestion works much better, something like „It looks like you are in Germany. Go to the DE version?” with a clear option to decline. Oh, and remember the visitor’s choice. Nobody likes being asked the same question on every page view.
Separate URLs for language versions and hreflang
Each language version should have its own URL. No swapping content based on cookies or browser settings. You can choose separate country domains, subdomains or directories such as /de/ or /en/. Hreflang in WordPress annotations or sitemap entries tell Google which version to show a given user in the results.
Keep one language for content and navigation on a single page, without translations placed side by side, because the search engine detects the language from the visible text. Local words in URLs? Fine, as long as you encode them in UTF-8.
Country selection on a WordPress site step by step
You start with a market plan and finish with tests from different locations. In order:
- Define the markets and languages you actually serve.
- Decide on the URL structure: domains, subdomains or directories.
- Add a visible country and language switcher in the header or footer.
- Set up country detection as a suggestion, not an obligation.
- Turn off redirects where they do harm: on legal pages, in the cart, at checkout and on campaign landing pages.
- Test how it works through a VPN and in several browsers.
For steps four and five, the Country Selector Pro plugin comes in handy, as it detects the country by IP address. It lets you set redirects to specific pages, categories or domains, turn them off for selected pages and posts, and also personalise content, images and offers for a given country.
Personalising content by country instead of moving the visitor
Sometimes you do not need to move anyone at all. It is enough to keep the visitor on the same page and change only part of it: delivery information, a promo banner, contact details. No extra URLs, and the visitor immediately sees what applies to them. In my view this is often the most sensible option. What usually needs localising?
- currency and delivery terms,
- special offers and discounts,
- images and banners,
- contact details and service hours.
One word of caution. Differentiating prices and sales terms for consumers from different European Union countries is subject to separate regulations, so it is better to discuss such a model with a lawyer. And regardless of the country, the core content of the page must remain accessible to search engine crawlers.
Well-configured country selection on a WordPress site suggests rather than decides for the visitor. It rests on three pillars: separate URLs for each version, a suggestion instead of a forced redirect, and a switcher that is always within reach. That is it.
Frequently asked questions
Does automatic redirection by country hurt Google rankings?
It can. Google’s crawler usually connects from the US, and with a forced redirect it will not reach the other versions, so they may not appear in the results. It is safer to suggest a version change and let the visitor decide.
What is the difference between a language switcher and country selection?
Language is about translating the content, country is about the offer, delivery and prices. A store operating in several markets usually needs both mechanisms, because a customer from Belgium may want French text but Belgian delivery terms.
Does IP geolocation always detect the country correctly?
No. VPNs, corporate networks and travel can mislead it. That is why visitors must be able to change the version manually at any time, and the detected country should serve only as a starting point.
